Virginia Mortgage Relief Program, or VMRP, provides assistance to homeowners experiencing delinquency due to a financial hardship as a result of COVID-19 to help address mortgage and/or other qualified home ownership-related delinquencies to avoid default, foreclosure, or displacement. Financial hardship could include an increase in living expenses, childcare, change in household size, job loss or reduction in income, etc.

What is HAF? The Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) is intended to support homeowners facing housing instability resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commonwealth of Virginia received $258 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds through the U.S. Department of the Treasury to launch the Virginia Mortgage Relief Program to keep Virginians safe at home.
Effective January 10, 2023, the maximum amount of assistance to eligible Virginia homeowners is $50,000 with no cap on the number of months past due. Homeowners experiencing a financial hardship due to COVID-19 after January 21, 2020 (this may include a financial hardship that began before January 21, 2020, and continued after that date due to COVID-19) with a delinquency amount of $50,000 or less may now be eligible for assistance. Applicants who were previously deemed ineligible due to the original program cap policy should contact a program representative at 833-OUR-VMRP (833-687-8677), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. to begin the appeal process.
