Virginia Mortgage Relief
Struggling to pay your mortgage due to COVID-19?
No-cost assistance is available for Virginia homeowners.
If you believe you were approached by non-VMRP representatives offering VMRP-related financial assistance, charging a fee for application assistance, or requesting your personal information, please submit a Fraud, Waste and Abuse Allegation Reporting Form or call 800-228-4167.
PROGRAM UPDATE: As we begin to approach full disbursement of allocated U.S. Treasury funds, the VMRP will no longer accept applications, beginning October 1, 2023.
Virginia homeowners financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic who would benefit from this assistance are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as funding is limited. Eligible applications submitted prior to October 1, 2023, will be processed based on remaining funding availability, with applicants at risk of foreclosure taking priority in the process.
Virginia Housing is pleased to announce the launch of the Virginia Mortgage Relief Program, or VMRP, to provide assistance to homeowners experiencing delinquency due to a financial hardship as a result of COVID-19 to help address mortgage and/or other qualified home ownership-related delinquencies to avoid default, foreclosure, or displacement. Financial hardship could include an increase in living expenses, childcare, change in household size, job loss or reduction in income, etc.
If you are a homeowner seeking assistance, visit our Eligibility page to review VMRP eligibility requirements, what is covered by VMRP, and a list of all required documents necessary to complete your application.

What is HAF? The Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) is intended to support homeowners facing housing instability resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commonwealth of Virginia received $258 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds through the U.S. Department of the Treasury to launch the Virginia Mortgage Relief Program to keep Virginians safe at home.
Effective January 10, 2023, the maximum amount of assistance to eligible Virginia homeowners is $50,000 with no cap on the number of months past due. Homeowners experiencing a financial hardship due to COVID-19 after January 21, 2020 (this may include a financial hardship that began before January 21, 2020, and continued after that date due to COVID-19) with a delinquency amount of $50,000 or less may now be eligible for assistance. Applicants who were previously deemed ineligible due to the original program cap policy should contact a program representative at 833-OUR-VMRP (833-687-8677), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. to begin the appeal process.
